House Storms the UK

1987 news seemed to be bad news on the back of bad news. Terry Waite the special envoy of Archbishop of Canterbury was kidnapped in Beirut. The ferry disaster at Zebrugge saw 180 passengers drown. We then had the Hungerford Massacre where Michael Ryan killed 16 people before turning on himself. 11 people were killed by the Provisional IRA at a Remembrance parade in Enniskillen. We then heard of the 31 people who lost there lives in the Kings Cross fire on the London Underground.

Storms then hit the UK and was worst in the south of England where 31 people lost there lives and then 2 days later we had the Black Monday when the stock market levels fell in New York then around the world in mass panic.

House music gained its first UK number one when American Steve Harley hit gold with jack your body despite no radio play and the dance theme continued with M/A/R/R/S pump up the volume at the end of the year which was to give a taste of things to come. However, more traditional avenues were still selling well. the older generation were still making an impact. Aretha Franklin duet with George Michael (I knew you wee waiting), Ben E King (stand by me) and the Bee Gees (you win again) all graced the top. Also Aretha's god daughter Whitney Houston also scored a number one with the huge catchy disco number I want to dance with somebody.

1987 saw two artists have two number ones with Madonna tracks of La isla Bonita and Papa Don't Preach and the Pet Shop Boys with Its a Sin and Always on my mind. A novelty was in between those none other than The Firm with Star Trekin in tribute to Star Trek.

Stock Aitken and Waterman were beginning to dominate the charts and 2 of there acts enjoyed stays at the top, first of all Mel and Kim with Respectable and tea boy Rick Astley Never gonna give you up which went on to be the biggest selling single of 1987.

Following his split from Culture club Boy George continued the success with everything I own. Ferry Aid also went top with the old Beatles classic Let it Be to raise funds for the Zebrugge disaster.

Movie themes had an influence on two number ones with Starship nothing gonna stop us now (Mannequin) and Los Lobos with the self titled film La Bamba.

To Finish 2 ballads hit the top with Michael Jackson Cant Stop loving you and Shropshire finest T'pau with china in your hand.

Mel and Kim were the only British girl group to achieve a number one in the 1980s.

The Simpsons cartoon debuts on the Tracey Ullman show.

Def Leppard Hysteria album is the longest rock album ever released.

Irish man Johnny Logan was the first artist to win the Eurovision twice.

Deaths in the music industry saw the flamboyant pianist Liberace pass away and Reggae musician Pete Tosh gunned down in his own home during a bungled raid.

The album charts saw solo artists enjoy great success with Kate Bush (The whole story) and Paul Simon (Graceland) starting the year off. The middle of they year saw Whitney Houston (Whitney) and Terence Trent Darby (Introducing the hardline according to...) and then towards the end of the year The Boss (Tunnel of Love), Sting (Nothing like the sun), George Michael (Faith) and New boy Rick Astley (Whenever you need somebody).

The HITS V NOW battle still raged on with HITS 6 enjoying 2 spells at the top and NOW 9 and 10 assuming the customary role at the head of the pile.

Some older artists made a steady return to the top with Fleetwood Mac legendary Tango in the night, Def Leppard highly awaited Hysteria and Michael Jackson biggest selling album of the year BAD.

New talent was to freshen things up and none bigger than Curiosity killed the cat keep your distance, swing out sister Its better to travel and T'pau bridge of spies.

80s Music Revisited: Hand of God Summer Madness

80s Music Revisited: Hand of God Summer Madness: The biggest news in 1986 was the Nuclear disaster in Chernobyl in the Ukraine where 190 tonnes of highly radioactive Uranium was thrown into...

Hand of God Summer Madness

The biggest news in 1986 was the Nuclear disaster in Chernobyl in the Ukraine where 190 tonnes of highly radioactive Uranium was thrown into the atmosphere and to this effects parts of Ukraine and Belarus.

Journalist John McCarthy was kidnapped in Beirut and was later released in 1991. Also we saw the emergence of sports baddest man on the planet Mike Tyson capture his first world title in Las Vegas.

The royals had there ups and downs with Hampton Court Palace submerged in fire but the royal wedding of Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew at Westminster abbey help lift the mood.

1986 most talked about news was the hand of god goal that ended England's world cup hopes in Mexico. Diego Maradona small part ensured Argentina progresses all the way at England's expense.

The number one singles of 1986 went from the sublime to the ridiculous. 1986 we saw the demise of bands Wham, Madness, Culture Club and the Clash. This paved the way for others to take the challenge. Pet Shop Boys started the year with West End Girls and Norway's greatest import A-Ha took over with The sun always shine on TV. Billy Ocean rules the waves with when the going gets tough only to be knocked by a reaction a chain reaction that is by Diana Ross.

The number one history books then went through a indifferent phase. Cliff Richard and the young ones hit gold with living doll then was followed by two classy tracks George Michael a different corner and the Austrian showman Falco with rock me Amadeus. We then suffered the annoying Chicken song by spitting image and Dr and the medics monotone spirit in the sky. It picked briefly with Wham final Single Edge of Heaven and Madonna Papa dont preach. We then had a succession of disco slowies at number one with Chris DeBurgh Lady in red, Boris Gardner I want to wake up with you, actor Nick Berry every loser wins and Berlin's take my breath away from the film Top Gun.

Mixed in between all that was Madonna fighting the cause pop melody with true blue and the communards went on to have the biggest selling single of 1986 with the disco classic don't leave me this way.

The end of the year couldn't have been in more contrast with the Swedish perm rockers Europe with the final countdown to a capella song by Housemartins named caravan of love and the year ended with Jackie Wilson reet petite to end a rather confusing year of UK taste.

Did You Know?

A-ha were the first Norwegian act to top the UK singles chart. In addition they also won a record 8 awards at the MTV video music awards.

Sam Fox stopped posing on page 3 for the sun.

13 year old girl Sandra Kim won the eurovision song contest for Belgium.

Deaths in the musical world saw the unfortunate death of 24 year old Cliff Burton the bassist for Metallica who died whilst the tour bus was involved in a accident. Also the Irish rocker Phil Lynott who led the inspirational band Thin Lizzy who died at a very young 36.

The Album charts didn't see much activity, in fact the top spot only exchanged 14 times which was the lowest in the 1980s. NOW 6 started the year in pole position but was quickly replaced by Dire Straits again who were to stay 10 weeks at the top with Brothers in arms.

Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music greatest hits enjoyed a spell at the top then some legendary names equally followed Peter Gabriel So, Queen A kind of magic, Genesis Invisible touch and Madonna True Blue which went on to be the biggest seller of 1986.

The UK Jackson 5 equivalent Five Star silk and steel made an appearance at the top and Paul Simon influential Graceland enjoyed a long spell at the head only to be arrested by the Police whose single collection took over.

NOW and HITS were having there customary battle with HITS 4 and 5 topping but not be outshone NOW responded with NOW 7 and 8 also hitting the heady heights.

Towards the end of the year Feargal Sharkey a good heart was replaced by Wham I'm your man and at the end of the year Shaky did it with a Christmas number one aptly named Merry Christmas everyone.

Kate Bush Hounds of love, Phil Collins No Jacket Required and the top selling album of 1985 Dire Straits Brothers in arms. A spell in the summer saw the summit change with the Style Council Our favourite shop, Bryan Ferry Boys and Girls and Marillion Misplaced Childhood exchange places.

Also 1985 saw the compilation album dominate gradually. 1984 - Do they Know Its Frankie..

The news in 1984 was dominated by two events one nationally and the other internationally. Firstly Britain was locked in a year long Miners Strike which ripped the heart out of communities and families. With the Unions and the government at loggerheads there was no real winner. Overseas the BBC report by Michael Burke regarding the famine in Ethiopia pricked a lot of consciences and eventually Aid was sent and a charity single to help raise funds and awareness.

1984 nearly saw the UK cabinet destroyed in a hotel in Brighton when a bomb went off. The Provisional IRA attempted to assassinate the whole government but failed. However, In India PM Indira Ghandi was assassinated by her two Sikh guards. This set of civil disobedience and over 2700 Sikhs were killed in the trouble.

Also the comedian/magician Tommy Cooper died on stage during a live TV programme. 1984 also saw the Olympic carnival arrive in LA with Tessa Sanderson, Daley Thompson and Seb Coe earning Gold. While at the winter Olympics in Sarajevo Torvell and Dean earned Gold with 12 perfect 6.0 to the music of Bolero.

Finally, British telecom was privatised and this was the keyword for 80s Britain.

The Music scene in Britain was thriving amongst all the chaos. The UK single sales were the second highest recorded sales since records began. In terms of success the city of Liverpool enjoyed huge success. Paul McCartney enjoyed a number one with Pipes of Peace and perhaps the biggest thing to hit the charts since the 60s was Frankie Goes to Hollywood who enjoyed 3 number ones over a 16 week period with Relax, Two Tribes and Power of Love. In fact the single Relax was banned by the BBC and as a result the song enjoyed huge success and stayed 42 weeks in the top 40.

European success was limited to the German artist Nena who went to number one with 99 red balloons. The Americans success was limited but provided huge hits in terms of sales. Lionel Richie enjoyed a 6 week stay at the top with Hello and Stevie Wonder also a 6 week stay with I just Called to say I love you. Heady times For Motown records. Also Chaka Khan enjoyed the top spot with the Prince written song I feel for you.

British Bands were also in the act and possibly the two biggest in the teen market were Duran Duran and Wham. Duran Duran struck first with the Reflex but wham countered with Wake me up and Freedom. Not being content with that George Michael released his first solo single the Careless Whisper and this duly went to the top.

We also had a one hit wonder with Jim Diamond I should have known better. He obviously did as we never heard from him again. However the year ended with the 2 biggest selling singles of that year being locked at number one and two for 5 weeks. At Number 2 was Last Christmas by Wham and the coveted Christmas spot was Band Aid do they know its Christmas time. Both worthy number ones but there can only be one winner.

Deaths in the musical world saw Jackie Wilson, Luke Kelly the Irish folk singer and Marvin Gaye leave us but not forgotten.

Did you know?

Hello by Lionel Richie was Motown label first Million selling UK single.

Frankie goes To Hollywood were the first group since fellow Liverpudlians Gerry and the Pacemakers to have 3 number ones from there first 3 releases.

Half penny and the pound note went out of circulation.

Virgin Atlantic makes its first maiden flight.

The Album charts also was an assortment of all types. The NOW success gathered more momentum as NOW 1, 2 and 3 all hit the top in 1984. Now 4 failed as CBS released a Rival called Hits Album which kept the top spot under strong pressure. The Liverpool success continued with Paul McCartney Regards to Broad Street and Frankie's Welcome to the pleasure dome match the singles success.

From over the pond, American success was limited to Two number ones but what big successes they were. Michael Jackson Thriller (The biggest selling album of all time) and Lionel Richie Cant slow down (Biggest seller in 1984) set the bench mark.

British artists also enjoyed success with Paul Young No Parlez, Howard Jones Human Lib, David Bowie Tonight, Thompson Twins Into the gap and Wham Make it big all enjoyed similar success.

Reggae was enjoying a period of dominance when Island records released the Iconic album Legend by Bob Marley and the Wailers. The album stayed at the top for 12 weeks and there wasn't a home that didn't have this masterpiece.

There was also Celtic dominance when Eurthymics started the trend with Touch, followed by Simple Minds sparkle in the rain. Later on in the year U2 Unforgettable Fire reached the pinnacle to be replaced by Celtic folk rock band Big Country Steeltown album.

Sparkle in the Rain - Simple Minds

1983 Young guns go for it!

1983 saw a TV revolution in the mornings as BBC and ITV had there own war with new breakfast programmes (there was a worry that people wouldn't go to school or work!) BBC started the challenge and ITV followed 2 weeks later. Another TV first saw Michael Jackson release a 14 Minute yes 14 minute video promo for Thriller. Also the biggest robbery in Britain took place when the Brinks Matt vault was broken into and £26 million in gold bars were taken.

In terms of Music there was a mixed bag again. Renee and Renato carried on from 1982 and started 1983 in poll position before a Motown resurgence started by a cover by Phil Collins You cant hurry love, Michael Jackson continued with Billie Jean and the theme completed by another Motown cover by Paul Young Wherever I lay my hat.

Australian band Men at work made light work with Down Under and made its way to the top. Power ballads were to make an impression and none bigger than the Welsh queen Bonnie Tyler Total eclipse of the heart written by Jim Steinman the architect of many a Power Ballad.

1983 saw the early new romantics shed there make up and deliver top spots we saw Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet score there first number ones. Spandau Ballet True was to become a school favourite at the end of the night! another school favourites who didn't get to number one were Wham Young Guns and New order Blue Monday.

Some familiar names still achieved the top spot with David Bowie Lets dance, Rod Stewart Baby Jane and the Police Every breath you take.

The young guns were certainly going for it with Kajagoogoo too shy and New Edition Candy Girl with bad boy Bobby Brown went all the way. Reggae continued its success with Birmingham's finest UB40 scoring a number one with Neil Diamonds Red Red Wine. Billy Joel also made a welcome return to the charts and scored a massive hit with Uptown Girl possibly to show new girlfriend/wife Christine Brinkley (should have been called Lucky Man!).

The biggest selling single was Karma Chameleon by Culture Club and the song enjoyed a 6 week stay at the head of the charts. The year ended with a capella vocal group the Flying Pickets with Yazoo song Only You.

Deaths in 1983 saw Billy Fury, Karen Carpenter and Dennis Wilson leave the musical world.

Abba split up in 1983 but the music still goes on
The First Now that's what I call Music is released and still goes on
UK single chart had a radical shake up with gallop taking over and introducing electronic terminals to gather sales information rather than the 'old sales diary'.

The Album charts saw the usual big names and future big names hit the very pinnacle. John Lennon collection carried on from 1982, Pink Floyd The Final Cut also made the cut along with the Beach Boys, The Police, Genesis and Lionel Richie. the Newcomers included The Hurting by Tears for Fears, Michael Jackson Thriller, Spandau Ballet True, Wham Fantastic, Duran Duran seven and the ragged tiger, Paul Young No Parlez and future Rock Giants U2 with War all top of the class.

Although Yazoo wrote a number one single they had to be content with the consolation of a number one album You and me both. UB40 and Culture Club also enjoyed single and album success but the compilation album of Now thats what I call Music made its debut who said Various artists wouldn't last!

1982 War and Peace

1982 saw the news dominated by war and security. Britain went to war with Argentina over the Falklands which saw many service people on both sides suffer horrific losses.

Security was also on the news with the IRA bombings in Hyde Park and Regents Park which saw more service people die. Also the Queen awoke to find a Michael Fagan having a chat with her on her bed. 1982 saw the demise of the Ford Cortina and ceased production. A great British legacy now defunct for progress.

In terms of Music Culture Club made the headlines with Men dressed up as women wearing make up (took some getting used to back then). Bucks fizz also carried on there success with 2 number ones with Land of make believe and the camera never lies.

The Jam also called it a day but went out with 2 number ones with the classic Town Called Malice and Beat Surrender. Shakin Stevens was still around and he hit the top with Oh Julie. Extreme hits were still hitting the top with Tight Fit Lion sleeps tonight and Goombay dance Band ditty 7 tears and yes it did give me tears! also Legends Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder also had a duet Ebony and Ivory which went all the way to the top.

The Germans also enjoyed British success with electro pioneers Kraftwerk classic Das Model and Nicole (Eurovision winner) enjoying German dominance. 1982 also saw two solo artists who left for pastures new enjoy success on there own. Those in the dock were Adam Ant (ex Adam and the Ants) and Captain Sensible (Ex-Damned) and were guilty of 2 classic number ones with goody two shoes and Happy Talk.

Also Madness scored there first number one with House of Fun as there prolific hit factory went into overdrive. Towards the end of year saw some big sales and 2 films profited from this. Rocky film wouldn't be a Rocky film without Survivor who enjoyed the top with Eye of the tiger and Fame went top by Irene Cara. However, British interest was still strong with Dexys Come on Eileen the perennial disco foot stomping favourite, Musical Youth Pass the dutchie and the equally classic Do you really want to hurt me by newcomers Culture Club which fused reggae and pop. The reggae theme continued with Eddy Grant I don't want to dance.

The year ended in a Marmite moment with Rene and Renato enjoying a spell at the top with Save your Love in stark contrast to the beginning of the year when the Human League Classic Dont You want me was ruling the waves.

In terms of Albums Barbara Streisand enjoyed 9 weeks on the top with Love Songs and was the biggest selling album of 1982. The Americans enjoyed more success with Barry Manilow live album and our love affair with Fame continued with the film soundtrack and the Kids from fame both hitting the top along with the film and TV programmes to follow.

ABBA continued there prolific 2 albums a year and both hitting the top but 1982 was the year of compilation albums with John Lennon, Madness, Abba and The Jam enjoying the heady heights. The steel city of Sheffield also celebrated 2 new successes with ABC and The Human League with Lexicon of Love and Dare. However, the old diehards of Roxy Music and Dire straits enjoyed success with there works.

The two surprising number ones were Status Quo and Iron Maiden. Two distinct styles, Quo rocking style guaranteed audience but metal was now pushing into the mainstream and Iron Maiden were determined to punch above there weight.

Deaths of 1982 was dominated by the legendary Blues Brother John Belushi.

1981 Antmania rules Britannia

1981 was on a social basis a dark period in the UK. The summer riots of 1981 dominated the headlines (fast forward 30 years later!!) but this was more of a race issue than just pure looting. The IRA hunger strikes culminating in elected member of the House Bobby Sands dieing at age of 27, the bombing on the mainland continued with the blast at the Grand Hotel in Brighton where the Tories were having there conference. On a positive the social highlight was Charles and Diana Royal wedding which became a national event (cue 30 years later again!)

Musically only one Group dominated the charts Adam and the Ants led by the charismatic Adam Ant with his wacky clothing and make up.

Synth Pop was beginning to rule the waves with a influx of groups from all corners of the UK such as Ultravox, Depeche Mode, OMD, Human League and Soft Cell. The Human League had a huge hit with Don't you Want me and Soft Cell had a massive Summer number 1 with Tainted Love which went on to be the biggest selling single in the UK.

Following on from the unfortunate death of John Lennon he had two posthumous number one in succession with Imagine and Woman and shortly after that Roxy Music had a number one with Jealous Guy which was penned by John Lennon.

Good old rock and roll had a resurgence with the Welsh Elvis Shakin Stevens notching 2 Number ones with This ole House and Green Door. Also Motown was enjoying a purple patch when Michael Jackson and Smokey Robinson also enjoyed a spell at the top. Michael was to leave Motown and enjoy even greater success as the eighties progressed.

As said the summer was in turmoil with riots and this was summed up by the Specials classic hit Ghost Town which reflected the anger of Britain at that time. However, all was not lost as Bucks Fizz won the eurovision to lift spirits and in the process helped themselves to a top spot with Making your mind up.

The Europeans were not to be outdone as Julio Igelsias and Joe Dolce both hit the top of the parade. Joe Dolce was to cause more angst as his annoying hit Shaddap your face kept the classic Ultravox track Vienna off the deserved number one spot. Bizarrely Vienna was the fourth biggest selling single of 1981 even outselling Shaddap Your Face.

1981 also saw the death of two pioneers of music firstly Bill Haley passed away and then the iconic reggae star Bob Marley passed away at a young age through Cancer. Both of there legacy still live on today.

The album was dominated by Adam and the Ants with the release of Kings of the wild frontier which enjoyed 12 weeks at number 1 and was by far the biggest selling album of 1981. ABBA had there usual 2 number one albums. The Police to match there single success also had a long spell at number one with ghosts in the machine. Also John Lennon, Queen, Shakin Stevens and Human League also enjoyed the status of number one albums and singles.
New romantics were hitting the top with Adam and the Ants dominating with the likes of Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet in the background.

1980 The Margaret Thatcher Experience

With Maggie becoming our leader in May 1979. British Music could be compared to the social scene at the time. We saw a dramatic switch in musical/political differences. The late seventies saw a lot of musical genres from Punk rock to New Wave and the introduction of 2 tone records to which the youth of Britain could relate to. However, the 80's was directly shaped by 3 major developments.

Firstly, the technological leap to sampler and sequencers and programmed drums, effectively a whole band could be replaced by a button.

Secondly, the advent of MTV which saw the success of video promos and bands with big film type budgets to produce a 3 minute epic.

Lastly, the crossover of different types of music where many would merge the likes of soul, rock, pop and disco.

The biggest success  of all three would be Michael Jackson who became the self proclaimed King of Pop.

So how did the music scene fair in 1980. New wave and  2 tone were having sucess with the Pretenders and the specials respectively having there first number one hits. The Police had the biggest selling UK hit with Dont stand so close to me which was a fuse of Reggae/pop. Also other bands had their maiden number one hits such as The Jam and Dexys Midnight runners. Also 1980 saw a variant mix of music that hit number one diverse genres such as Country Music with Kenny Rogers Coward of the County, Motown giants Detroit Spiners with Working my way back to you, the american influence was still strong with Blondie, The Theme for MASH TV programme and Barbra Streisand all hitting the top. The European giants ABBA also made the coveted spot.

The last 2 number ones of 1980 were in stark contrast, firstly John Lennon hit the top with Just Like Starting Over following his untimely death weeks previous and then he was replaced by St Winnifreds Choir with the Grandma Song Starting the long trend of novelty records in the 1980s.

1980 also saw the deaths of some of music biggest icons. John Lennon was murdered in New york, Ian Curtis the Lead singer of Cult band Joy Division committed suicide just days before the start of there USA tour. Bon Scott lead singer of ACDC died after one too many binges and Led Zeppelin Drummer John Bonham was found dead by his band mate.

In terms of albums there were some notable achievements with ACDC hitting the mainstream with the release of the infamous Back in Black, the pretenders with there self titled album to match the singles success and ABBA started and ended the year with 2 number one albums with the later being the biggest selling album of the year.

Also in 1980 soon to be rock giants U2 released there first album named Boy and Joy Division relased there final posthumous Album Closer which had all the hallmarks of being the most definitive album ever.

Did you know? The first monsters of rock took place in 1980 and still evergreen now.

80s Revivalists

Welcome

I decided to do a blog to look into the decade that had everything and more. For me no decade in terms of music went through such drastic changes of genres and styles like the 80's. A lot was hype and marketing, some was politically charged and some were just bloody awful.

I will start with the early eighties when men wore make up to the late eighties were everything and anything would go. Cultures would change, music changed, people changed and outlooks changed. Gone are the days spent all day in record stores, you dont even have to get out of bed to buy music!

So join me in revisiting those days where hopefully it will be informative, videos to watch and if you are missing those tunes where to buy.

At the age of 41, I have decided to go back on the road to DJ and when I did a DJ course to get back into the swing at the Midi School in Salford. I bought in some old classic Indie tracks from the 80's and the chap helping me was bought back to his young adulthood. You just sometimes forget the old classics and hopefully this blog will do the same.
