Belfast Child

This Week in 1989 Simple Minds gained there first UK number one single with the Gaelic melody of Belfast Child.

The song was released on the Ballad of the Streets EP which included the songs Mandela Day and Biko.

The lyrics were written by Simple Minds but the haunting tune was the old traditional Irish ballad called 'She moved through the Fair'. The song was over 6 minutes long which for Radio and TV was a bit on the long side so often the song was cut short.

The song was released on Virgin Records and was produced by Trevor Horn and Stephen Lipson.

The song would also feature on the future album release 'Street Fighting Years' which also hit the top spot.
